Martin Partners: At Heart We Are Storytellers

About Us – A Brief History

Martin Partners is the embodiment of the many years of experience David Martin, Stephen Martin, and Jim Maxwell have acquired while helping clients become winners in the many categories in which they compete.

Early in his career, the late David Martin founded a firm called Martin & Woltz. It was renamed The Martin Agency when Stephen joined David as a partner after having spent six years with a large advertising agency in Baltimore.

Following its meteoric rise to national prominence, The Martin Agency was acquired by The Ogilvy Group. The Martin brothers left the firm a few years later to pursue new opportunities.

David and Stephen then founded a business they named for their father, Hawley Martin. Also highly successful, Hawley Martin Partners was acquired by The Interpublic Group. It was later merged with Arnold Communications.

Stephen Martin then spent a number of years writing and editing books. Topics included the Toyota production system, the Toyota product development system, lean manufacturing in build to order environments, how to transform a business into a lean enterprise, and how to create high performing organizations using interlocking teams coupled with process based leadership.

Meanwhile, David started a new firm called Martin Branding where he was joined by Jim Maxwell. Jim spent more than ten years working with David, conducting dozens of successful branding and rebranding projects.

In 2011, Stephen partnered with Jim and David, and Martin Branding was renamed Martin Partners.

Today, Martin Partners combines the expertise the Martins and Jim Maxwell bring to the table: 1) a proven methodology for identifying a vision and developing a winning brand, and 2) a proven methodology for creating high performing organizations using interlocking teams, a few basic rules, and dynamic scorecards coupled with action registers.
